What books are currently being read is a favorite conversation Adventure Associates travelers engage in. What are we reading? Below are recent recommendations from our travelers.

Title: Blue Shoes & Happiness
Author: Alexander McCall Smith
Suggested by: Sandy Braun
What is it about? Ok, so maybe we're obsessed with the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series - is there a reason not to be? Add this, his seventh book (beat that, J.K. Rowling) to your beloved library.

Title: Ultimate High: My Everest Odyssey
Author: Goran Kropp with David Lagercranz
Suggested by:Skier Yellowstone Ski Trip
What is it about? One of the "ultimate" solo travelers regales us with his "ultimate" bicycle journey from Sweden to Nepal, including an oxygen-free summit of Mt. Everest and the rugged ride home.

Title: The Master Butchers Singing Club
Author: Louise Erdrich
Suggested by: Katherine Steets, Mt. Assiniboine X-C Ski tour.
What is it about?Post-WWI European immigrants lead compelling lives in Argus, North Dakota, the small fictional town of Edrich's previous novels. A wonderful tale full of rich, expansive imagery, that verges on magic realism.

Meals served by new friends in distant countries result in recipe swaps. Here is a favorite.

Summer Tomato Salad

Recipe by: Adventure Associates guide, Hamid - Lamu Island, Kenya, E. Africa.

  • Fresh summer beefy tomatoes
  • Sweet onions, thinly sliced
  • Lime juice
  • Cayenne, sprinkle lightly
  • Salt & Pepper to taste

Mix Lime juice and spices to taste. Marinate tomatoes and onions in lime and spices for a picnic on the beach with Sourdough Bread, and Coca-Cola. Served best with fresh-caught Red Snapper from the Indian Ocean, cooked over a grill of branches and thicket found on the shoreline. Lick fingers accordingly. Actually served on hot summer days for any occasion and is a very refreshing treat.
