...My first weekend in June

by Vanessa Carr

Scouring the sky for Bald Eagles, Orca Whale Watching, sea kayaking, my partner, my best friends, the San Juan Islands in beautiful Puget Sound, and 2 sisters we just met from the East coast. We skipped between rains and kept warm conversations and laughing a constant. It's the end of my first 50 years and I now have a better appreciation of why I must keep healthy, exercise and eat more spinach.

Sea Kayaking along the shore, we saw beautiful purple starfish, harbor seals balancing on rocks in the sun, cormorants swooping and diving, and orange-footed Oyster Catchers trying to ward off the eagles. We stopped kayaking to have lunch on a warm-stoned beach with treasures of beach glass and tiny shells. At night the screeching heron sounded prehistoric and the owl's feeding sounded like it could have been a family of 3 or 4. There were deer on the beach, a black fox at the side of the road with her curious cub in the scrub. We drove along rolling vistas of San Juan Islands, fields of farms and horses, and a huge alpaca ranch.

We felt like gutsy women in our sturdy sea kayaks, paddling all the way to Lime Kiln Park, where we toured the lighthouse: amazing technology with plastic crystal and a three-watt bulb that shines across to Canada. Kayaking offshore from the lighthouse, our close encounters with the Orca Whales were exhilarating. "L" pod was back! Though quite scattered, we saw a lot of them surfacing. We even saw a new baby with her mother. Promising...
We were close to one big male (they have the taller dorsal fin) - we were right in his path. He had surfaced twice and was coming towards our sea kayaks broadside. We held our breath in anticipation; was he coming up a third time and HOW CLOSE? It felt like forever, then, right over our shoulders, "BOOOOSSHHH!" just 20 feet away! Big as a bus then back down in the water. We WOO HOO'd like little kids. That was my weekend, how was yours?
